COURSE OVERVIEW

  • MODULE ONE describes the intent of this course and the outcomes you can expect. It also invites you to establish the right mindset for the course. Finally, it allows you to connect with a learning partner, and establish your schedule for completing this course.
  • MODULE TWO introduces a research-based framework to goal achievement called GPDR/R: goal, plan, do, review/ revise. During this module, you will experience the process for yourself, and reflect on your experience with a colleague.
  • MODULE THREE will explore valuable research about foundational skills that help us all to set and achieve our goals. You will reflect on your own skill strengths and struggles, and see how knowing your skill profile can help you as you pursue goals of any kind.
  • MODULE FOUR will span over several weeks and will be done mostly in the context of your day-to-day work with clients.
    You will get valuable feedback as you support clients through each step of GPDR/R, experimenting with a few optional tools and tips.
  • MODULE FIVE, the closing module, is best done in collaboration with colleagues, and supervisors, as you prioritize ways to integrate this new approach into all aspects of your work.

START WITH A FOCUS ON SELF

As you go through the course, you’ll be asked to focus first on yourself – and later on participants. For example..
  • In module one you’ll use a research-based tool to reflect on your dominant mindset;
  • In module two you’ll use the goal achievement framework on one of your own goals;
  • In module three you’ll assess your own executive skill strengths and struggles.
Please don’t jump over these parts. Applying the research to yourself before thinking about how it applies to program participants is critical for your learning. And, it makes it much more interesting!

EXPERIMENT + LEARN

This course gives you a chance to experiment with new skills and approaches during your day-to-day work with clients.  Most of the learning you’ll get from this course will come from this experimentation – so don’t hold back!  After completing this course, we hope that you will become more focused on the power of goal achievement, in your own life and in the lives of clients. We hope you will be confident effectively coach participants on goal achievement, using a simple, research-based framework that fits your work/life and your style.

CONNECT WITH COLLEAGUES

Throughout this course, you are encouraged to exchange your insights with colleagues.
  1. A learning partner. Before beginning module one, find a learning partner with whom to exchange insights as you take the course. This could be a colleague who already took this course – or someone who is taking it at the same time. Set a regular time to meet (maybe walk or have lunch together) once-per-week for the next 6-8 weeks.
  2. A team. Before module one and after module five, we also encourage you to connect with your supervisor and, possibly, a bigger team. Ensure you have the support you need to engage fully in the course and to use what you’ve learned!

Note: This site also offers guidance for managers and supervisors to support you in this work.

COURSE MATERIALS

You only need two resources to complete this course: this website and the workbook.
  • This website houses a series of slides for each module of the course. Please find them under "take the course". You can begin each new module whenever you are ready for it, and you can advance  yourself through each module at your own pace. Note: Some of the slides direct you to other resources which will open in a new window. When done with each resource, simply continue walking yourself through the slides.
  • At key points in each module, you’ll be asked to write in your personalized course workbook. Please download and print your workbook now, and have it handy each time you sit to progress through the modules. Enjoy!
